چکیده

We consider γ-ray emission from heavy nuclei that are accelerated in the shocks of stellar winds and are excited in interactions with the ambient matter in the Orion complex. We show that the recent detection of γ-ray lines in the Orion complex by COMPTEL telescope can be explained by such a scenario, assuming cosmic abundances. The scenario is consistent with recent models of cosmic ray acceleration in stellar winds of massive stars. Subject headings: ISM: cosmic rays; gamma rays: theory; stars: mass loss

Interstellar Gamma Ray Lines from Low Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions

Evidence for the existence of low energy cosmic rays in the Galaxy comes from the COMPTEL observations of gamma ray line emission from Orion, and also from light element abundance data which seem to suggest a low energy rather than a relativistic Galactic cosmic ray origin for most of the light elements. The Orion and light isotope data are more consistent with a composition that is depleted in...

Gamma Ray Lines from the Orion Complex

We show that the 4.44 and 6.13 MeV line emission observed with COMPTEL from Orion is consistent with gamma ray spectra consisting of a mixture of narrow and broad lines or spectra containing only broad lines. We employed several accelerated particle compositions and showed that the current COMPTEL data in the 3{7 MeV region alone cannot distinguish between the various possibilities. However, th...

Wolf-Rayet stars and OB assoctations as gamma-ray line sources

We calculate the gamma-ray line production induced by energetic particles (EPs) in molecular clouds where massive star formation is taking place, assuming that the EPs originate from the winds of these stars. On the basis of recent Wolf-Rayet (W-R) models of the Geneva group, we analyse in detail the average composition of the winds from OB associations. We consider two initial stellar metallic...

A Gamma-ray Burst/pulsar for Cosmic-ray Positrons with a Dark Matter-like Spectrum

We propose that a nearby gamma-ray burst (GRB) or GRB-like (old, single and short-lived) pulsar/microquasar about 105−6 years ago may be responsible for the excesses of cosmic-ray positrons and electrons recently observed by the PAMELA, ATIC/PPB-BETS, Fermi and HESS experiments. We can reproduce the smooth Fermi/HESS spectra as well as the spiky ATIC/PPB-BETS spectra. The spectra have a sharp c...

Low Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions in Astrophysics

Gamma ray emission lines resulting from accelerated particle bombardment of ambient gas can serve as an important spectroscopic tool for abundance determinations. The method is illustrated by considering the gamma ray line emission observed from solar flares. The observation of similar gamma ray lines from Orion suggests the existence of large fluxes of low energy Galactic cosmic rays. The role...
